LG goes Full HD in 5 inches

LG has developed a new 5 inch LCD panel with Full HD (1920x1080) resolution. With a pixel density of 440 ppi, the panel goes far beyond even the most impressive LCD panels in today’s devices.

LG will exhibit a new 5 inch LCD IPS panel with Full HD resolution at the SID 2012 convention starting June 4.

The panel has been designed for mobile devices and boasts an impressive 1920x1080 – or Full HD – resolution; the same as on the HDTV in your living room. The small LCD panel has a pixel density of 440 ppi (pixels per inch), which is far higher than on any other device today.

For comparison the iPhone 4S has a pixel density of 330 ppi and LG’s own Optimus Vu has a pixel density of 256 ppi. However, the pixel density of the 5-inch panel exceeds the human’s eye to distinguish details at typical viewing distance and therefore brings no real advantages over today’s highest-resolution display panels in smartphones / tablets.

Why LG has chosen to develop the panel is left unsaid but LG has probably aimed to make integration with their TVs tighter, as the mobile phone use the same 16:9 format. Either way, LG has the bragging rights in the pixel race.

LG plans to start mass production of the 5-inch panel in the second half of the year, so we might see the first devices by year end.
