Everything at LG’s CES booth screamed “OLED!”, so why is LG also releasing a quantum dot LCD TV? It is mostly a defensive move, LG tells FlatpanelsHD. LG is still fully convinced that OLED is the future. LG’s first quantum dot TV will be called UF9400.

LG’s first quantum dot TV
Quantum dot is a big thing at this year’s CES. Most call it by the name, but Samsung has chosen to call it S’UHD. LG also has a name for it, calling it ColorPrime with some “quantum dot” mentions sprinkled in there.

LG’s first quantum dot TV is called UF9400 and the flagship LCD model will be available in 55 and 65-inch sizes within a few months. There will also be a UF9500 series, but this model is not using quantum dots. They are of course Ultra HD and LG is using local dimming to improve black depth and contrast in UF9400. LG further says that the TVs have ultra-slim designs and webOS 2.0.


LG says that the technology can increase the color gamut by around 30%, but makes no mention of how it compares to DCI or Rec.2020. At the moment all HD content is delivered in the Rec.709 gamut, and it is important to emphasize that quantum dots will only benefit consumers if the content industry begins releasing movies and TV series in DCI or Rec.2020. Almost nothing exists today.

A real alternative to OLED?
Is quantum dot a competitor to LG’s OLED TVs? LG thinks no. The company freely admits that it is mostly a defensive move to counter Samsung and others’ quantum dot LCD TVs that will be released later in 2015. LG notes that the current quantum dot-enabled TVs still use LCD technology with all its disadvantages. LG has also made sure to explain itself in a lengthy blog post.

LG thinks it is more like; “QD display is basically an upgraded version of an LCD display”. LG is still all-in on OLED TVs, but if you still want a quantum dot TV, LG will be happy to sell you the UF9400 model in Q2 2015.
