Samsung 2010 TV line-up - with impressions
FlatpanelsHD gives you an overview of the new Samsung 2010 flat panel TV line-up, with lot of pictures and impressions from the product launch in Sweden, Stockholm.

Samsung presented their 2010 TV line-up in Stockholm, Sweden, and we got a chance to see and touch the new TVs.
Samsung 9000 LED
Samsung’s flagship model this year is the 9000 LED series (LCD-TV with LED) that will be available in the summer of 2010.

Samsung will also be launching different design variants and one of the LCD-TVs had four different designs for example. Samsung also introduces their new four-legged metal stand but on some models you can choose to use the more traditional rectangular stand.

The C9000 LED series was there, though, and adore the thin profile on that one on the picture above.
The flagship plasma TV is the 8000 plasma series that will arrive in Q3 2010. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the 8000 plasma series in Stockholm but we saw the 7000 plasma series in a 63-inch variant.

Samsung has plans to incorporate 3D functionality in some of their high-end ranges. The IR transmitter has been integrated in the frame but the 3D glasses will have to be bought seperately.
The 3D effect on C8000 is good. I felt that perception of depth was good and there was very little crosstalk issues. Motion was a bit blurry, though, but not as blurry as with the passive 3D systems that a lot of cinemas use today. The C8000 LED series was there as well and it still very slim. Below you see the C8000 LED series in 3D mode.

Obejcts in the foreground, subtitles for example, had a tendency to appear a tad blurry, too.

This year the Samsung TVs are slimmer than ever. The 9000 LED series is just 8 mm which is stunning when you see it. The 8000 LED series is a bit thicker but no less impressive.
Samsung’s new plasma-TV are slim as well and the 3 cm plasma-TV trend that the B850 started last year dominated the 2010 line-up with the 6500, 7000 and 8000 plasma TV series have a 3 cm frame as well.
Samsung Premium Touch Remote
Samsung has developed a new remote that comes with the 9000 LED series. The remote that has a very Apple-ish design has traditional remote functionality but it also has a small LCD panel that you can actually use for watching TV and video.
The remote will also be available for the 7000 and 8000 series but is sold seperately.

The remote also lets you browse through your music, pictures and video on your PCs or NAC through DLNA: When you have found something you want to see or listen to you just"beat the air" with the remote towards the TV and the content will now be displayed full screen on your TV.
One of the cool new features on the Samsung TVs is the PVR function that is enabled on all ranges above 6500. With the PVR you can record TV directly onto a USB stick or a USB hard drive.
And if you want to improve sound quality on the very slim and sound handicapped Samsung TVs Samsung will offer you a soundbar with a separate subwoofer. You can see this one below.

Samsung Apps is another new feature much like the Apple Store. It allows different people and companies to develop services, games etc. for the Samsung TVs that you will be able to download and install on your Samsung TV afterwards.

Samsung will also introduce the new and improved Internet@TV system that gives you acces to the internet through different partnerships and serveces such as YouTube. The complete list is not ready yet but Samsung promised to keep us updated on this one.

In some countries Samsung will launch their 2010 models with a satelite tuner which is quite cool.
Samsung also mentions that they have been able to lower power consumption on the new plasma TV ranges and shows us how a 50-inch 6500 plasma series has reduced power consumption to about 150 W.

The C9000 series is the flagship model with an extremely thin design of just 8 mm. The TV is crazy and really impressive in reality because the super slim design seem so unreal.

When you wish to wallmount the TV the stand has to be detached and after that attached at the back of the TV using the small screwholes you see on the picture below.

Samsung LED C8000
The C8000 is the smaller brother but no less impresseive. In this model Samsung has incorporated an Edge LED backlight with local dimming. How the local dimming works together with Edge LED is explained in the questions section.

C8000 will be available in 32 (only 100 Hz), 40, 46, 55 and 65 inches called 32C8000, 40C8000, 46C8000, 55C8000, and 65C8000. Prices will be revealed in March.

The 7000 series is the step down from the 8000 series. This one uses the 2009 Samsung design philosophy with the black Touch of Colour design.

The 6500 series is the step down from C7000. It no longer features 3D and has no PVR function. The model is still slim.

The flagship plasma model is the C8000. You have to wait until Q3 to buy this wonder but then you can also look forward to an advanced calibration menu.

The C8000 plasma series will be available in 50, 58 and 63 inches called 50C8000, 58C8000, and 53C8000. Prices will be revealed in later this year

The step down from C8000 is C7000 and it seems that the European will be getting some of the same features of the C8000 in the C7000 with 3D, PVR, Real Black Filter and a 3 cm design.

Samsung has a complete line-up of LCD-TVs without LED backlight coming but I have chosen not to include these in this article. You can also expect a C5000 LED series.

Questions
- Will there be a soundbar/subwoofer available?Yes, the soundbar has been described in the first section and the subwoofer can be seen below.

- Can you ask about the local dimming system integrated on C8000 LCD-TVs? I would like to know how Samsung engineers have solved this feature on an edge lit panel?
Samsung didn’t tell us exactly how but I the system will be working much like an overall dimming feature. The Edge LED is dimmed from the sides (and the top and bottom) in 8-12 zones overall. So, it’s not like on the backlit LED but more like a dynamic contrast system. Further information on the practical effect when we receive the first review sample.
- I would like to know mainly about the new plasmas.
- What are the main differences between the c7000 (3d model) and the non-3d c6500 model?
- Has Samsung done the same as panasonic and removed the front glass from the panel?
- What have they done to reduce glare and improve black levels?
- And naturally pricing and energy consumption
The main differences between the C7000 and C6500 models will be 3D, PVR and the Real Black Filter (in Europe).
The glass in the panel that caused reflections form white text on black background has been removed (or reduced to almost zero reflection), yeah.
Samsung has incorporated the Real Black filter that is said to improve black levels but besides that no significant changes has been made in regards to black level and glare.
Energy consumption has been reduced a lot on the new plasma-TVs according to Samsung. TV new 50-inch plasma TVs will now have a power consumption of just 150 W.
- How are they adressing the serious clouding problem seen on the 2009 models (7000) in the new line?
They’re not. At least it didn’t really seem to bother the folks at the presentation.
- Please ask them if they raise the MLL, and degrade the Black Levels on their Plasmas, each time programmed voltage increases happen on their Panels, like Panasonic recently revealed happens with their Plasma displays.
If you get a chance, please put the same question to LG, about their Plasma displays.
They do but not as aggressive as on the Panasonic models. I have personally had an old Sammy plasma hanging around for 2-3 years (I don’t own it any longer) and I didn’t notice any significant changes in black levels (although peak brightness level was reduced some)
- Ask them if they have done anything to reduce the buzzing on their thin plasma models.
They have. At least according to the Samsung folks. We’ll find out in our review.
- oh, and also ask them if the iPhone like remote that comes with the LCD 9000 series is going to work with on the plasma models.
The Samsung guy didn’t know. He would return on that one. The remote works on all Sammy TVs by the way but the advanced features will only work on supported TV so on older sets you’ll only be able to control things such as volume controls, channel browsing etc.
