We took a sneak-peak at Kristian Larsen’s remote concept a few months back. Kristian Larsen has now released a complete description of his baand remote concept, which has been designed specifically for Smart TVs with Internet functionality

baand remote redefines Smart TVs

Since the fifties, when the TV remote control was first introduced, manufacturers have supported the stick-with-buttons concept. As TVs have become more and more advanced the manufacturers have simply added more buttons without reflecting over the actual concept, Kristian Larsen – the man behind the concept – argues.

Therefore he has decided to create a new TV remote control specifically designed to improve the experience with Internet connect TVs – or Smart TVs. The concept is called baand remote and the idea is that it relies on an interactive touch screen instead of physical buttons.

The baand remote is shaped like an ellipse, and is controlled with the thumb. Only three physical buttons are found; OK, back and forward. Everything else is controlled via the touch screen on the baand remote and the TV screen. Kristian Larsen says that the scrollable touch interface should provide the user with smooth and user-friendly navigation.

Normally, touch remotes are tiresome because you constantly need to look at the small screen to navigate. However, the baand remote moves the user interface to the TV screen, which enables the user to navigate the one-handed device without thinking about where the buttons are placed.

Another key feature is keyboard integration. With the common on-screen TV keyboard it is a pain to type in text. On the baand remote a full qwerty keyboard automatically appears whenever it is needed.

The baand remote has been created as a MA thesis project at the Kolding School of Design, in Denmark, by Kristian Ulrich Larsen. Kristian underlines that the baand remote is still a design concept and not a real product
Kristian has also designed the Flip Phone concept that received much publicity some time ago. Learn more about Kristian’s design concepts at www.idkul.
