Sony and Panasonic look to compete with the South Korean manufacturers in the OLED market, and has announced an OLED partnership.

The companies will jointly develop large-size OLED panels. Mass production will be initiated in 2013 and will be based on a printing-based method that allow them to produce low-cost OLED panels in large sizes and with high resolution.

The partnership marks the first time the two Japanese rivals collaborate on a large scale. The companies obviously plan to share know-how, technology and production methods but they underline that they will release differentiated products.

Not much more has been shared at this time but we also hear that the companies are looking into flexible OLED panels.
