The Korean police is investigating a case of stolen OLED technology. According to Yonhap News, OLED designs and production details have been stolen from LG.Display and Samsung and sold to Chinese and Taiwanese display manufacturers.

OLED technology stolen

Back in April it was reported that Samsung’s OLED technology had been stolen and that 11 people had been arrested. A new case is currently being investigated, and this time China is suspected of buying the technology.

According to the report an Israeli company called Orbotech is suspected of stealing and selling OLED technology designs from LG.Display and Samsung. The Korean police suspects Chinese BOE – along with others - of buying the stolen data. BOE is currently building a 5.5-generation OLED factory in Inner Mongolia.

The six Orbotech employees are said to have photographed circuit diagrams of LG and Samsung’s 55-inch OLED-TV panels when doing a routine check on production equipment. Photographs were stored on memory cards that were smuggled out hidden in shoes, belts and wallets.

OLED technology is obviously extremely important to South Korea and the government as the display industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. The global AMOLED market is estimated to be worth almost 80 billion USD.
