At CES 2013, Panasonic unveiled its 2013 line-up of Blu-ray players as well as two new media streaming boxes. One common feature on the new devices is Miracast support that enables Android users to wirelessly stream pictures, video and music onto the living room TV.

Panasonic pushes Miracast forward

Do you know Miracast? If you are invested in the Android eco-system you should check out the Miracast system that hopes to challenge Apple Airplay by enabling users to stream media files onto the big screen or mirror the smartphone or tablet screen onto the TV screen. Panasonic now supports Miracast on its 2013 Blu-ray players and media boxes. Miracast requires an Android 4.2 device.

Panasonic has announced new Blu-ray players, including DMP-BDT330 and DMP-BDT230. Both support 2D and 3D as well as the Smart Viera platform with TV apps such as Netflix, and Miracast. The 330 model even has 4K upscaling and 2 HDMI outputs.

In addition, Panasonic plans to release an inexpensive DMP-BD79 Blu-ray player without 3D and WiFi but with Smart Viera. The DMP-BDT500 from 2012 will continue into 2013.

Media streaming boxes

Panasonic has also announced two new media streaming boxes called DMP-MST60 and DMP-MS10. The former supports 3D and both of them support Miracast and DLNA.

In addition, Smart Viera with TV apps is built in. With the new media boxes Panasonic hopes to challenge streaming heavyweights such as Apple TV and the Roku players but given the lack of app selection on Panasonic’s Smart Viera platform, Panasonic will have to up its game in this arena.

The new Blu-ray players and media boxes will be available in February 2013. Pricing: $79.99 (DMP-BD79), $99.99 (DMP-BD89), $129.99 (DMP-BDT230), and $199.99 (DMP-BDT330). Media boxes: $99.99 (DMP-MST60) and $79.99 (DMP-MS10).
