Sony has sent out an invitation to the press, with the teaser text "See the Future". Sony did not hide the fact that it is all about PlayStation but they did not tell what kind of PlayStation event we could expect. Wall Street Journal chimed in shortly after and reported that this will indeed be the event where Sony will unveil the successor to the PlayStation 3, often called PlayStation 4.

Social aspects, focus on interaction

Wall Street Journal says that the PlayStation 4 will ship later this year and “incorporate more social gaming aspects”. Sony will obviously include updated hardware but is said to be more focused on how the users interact with the machine. It is reported that Sony had considered removing the optical drive but decided to keep it to ensure that even regions without a well-developed internet infrastructure could join in on the fun.

The market for game consoles is not only entering a new era but will also see increasingly fierce competition. In addition to Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, you can also expect game consoles from Steam (Valve), OUYA and maybe even Apple.

Sony’s current PlayStation 3 was launched in November 2006 – more than six years ago. It was launched a full year after Xbox 360. But Sony seems to be eager to reverse that trend with the introduction of PlayStation 4. We can’t wait!
