We first heard about Samsung’s plans to release an Oculus Rift-like VR headset in May. An image and details about the so-called Gear VR have now been leaked and will reportedly launch at IFA 2014 this September.
More VR headsets emerging
Oculus Rift has taken the world by storm and has since been acquired by Facebook for $2 billion, but they are not the only ones engaged in VR. Sony is making the Project Morpheus and Microsoft is also believed to be working on a VR headset.
So is Samsung. According to Sammobile, it will be called Gear VR and will be an accessory for Samsung’s Galaxy phones, possibly the Galaxy Note 4. Both devices will reportedly be unveiled at IFA 2014 in Berlin this September.
The Gear VR will not be a stand-alone product. Instead, users will be required to dock their Galaxy device into the headset. The Gear VR also makes use of the phone’s sensors. Another interesting point is that the software is actually developed in collaboration with Oculus.
FlatpanelsHD will be on the show floors at IFA 2014, so we will definitely check it out.
