Netflix takes on theatres with its first movie

30 Sep 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Netflix has already seen much success with its original TV series and documentaries. The next phase will be movies, and Netflix’s first will be a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It will hit Netflix and movie theatres simultaneously.

On Netflix and in theatres at the same time

Netflix’s first movie is a sequel to Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and it marks a major push for the streaming giant.

The movie titled Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Destiny will be released in all Netflix territories, including the new markets in Europe, and it will hit Netflix on the same day that it will debut in IMAX movie theatres. The release date is set for August 28, 2015, and Netflix hints that this is only the beginning.

Movies releases typically follow a stringent pattern defined by “windows”; first the cinema, then DVD/Blu-ray sales, then rentals and lastly TV channels (and often Netflix). Netflix wants to break down this release schedule by jumping straight to the first window. Netflix is also working on other movies.

- "The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement," said film producer Harvey Weinstein.

With more than 50 million viewers worldwide, Netflix definitely has a shot. And who know how many they will have when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Destiny premieres next year? Netflix has just entered Europe in a big way, including huge markets such as Germany and France.

Netflix’s plans to start producing movies could be the start of something interesting. It will also test the notion held by Hollywood that movies cannot succeed unless they start in a movie theatre.
