Netflix increases price for 4K streaming for new users

10 Oct 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Current subscribers have nothing to worry about – for now – but new subscribers will have to aim for the $11.99 / €11.99 monthly plan to stream Netflix in 4K.

4K Netflix gets more expensive

Previously, 4K streaming was available to subscribers of the $7.99 monthly plan, and if you created your account before October 2014 you will still be able to still stream 4K for the next 2 years.

Netlix 4K streaming

However from October 1st, 4K Ultra HD streaming will only be available if you subscribe to the more expensive $11.99 / €11.99 plan. Not much content is available in 4K so far, but you can watch House of Cards and Breaking Bad. Netflix also recently added The Blacklist and has said that all future original TV series will be shot in 4K. The more expensive plan also allows you to stream to 4 devices simultaneously.

The price increase has been rolled out quietly with no announcement from Netflix. To be fair, $11.99 per month is still an incredible deal for quality 4K streaming compared to other services. For 4K streaming you also need a 4K TV with HEVC and a fast internet connection. See our guide here.
