Sony has today announced PlayStation Vue, a cloud-based TV channel service that will be available on PlayStation consoles and a range of other devices, including non-Sony devices.

Sony was rumored to launch a TV service this year, and here it is. It is called PlayStation Vue and will roll out as an invite-only beta in New York in November on PS4 and PS3. It will offer around 75 TV channels, including channels from CBS, Fox, Discovery, and NBCUniversal – everything streamed over the internet.


In 2015, the service will expand to other devices, including the iPad and more non-Sony products. Besides live channels it will include on-demand content and catch-up TV in a “powerful user interface”. However, some content will be limited to the PlayStation console as Sony does not have the mobile rights, according to Bloomberg.

Vue will also offer search features and the ability to “record”, or more specifically tag, shows that will be available for 28 days.

Sony has not revealed prices, but says that there are no long contracts or installation charges, and that you will need no extra hardware. It will start in beta in New York and later expand to Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. The full commercial launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2015.
