Netflix is on a roll. In September, Netflix stepped into some of the biggest countries in Europe. Netflix hopes to be available everywhere in the world before 2020. The goal is to release 20 original TV series every year – movies not included.

The first global TV service
Netflix has just entered Europe in a big way. Next stop is Australia and New Zealand in March 2015, and the streaming giant is also rumored to expand to other parts of Europe and possibly Japan later in 2015.

By 2020, Netflix expects to be available everywhere.

- “Within five years, we’d love to see the product be completely global, available everywhere in the world.” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, at a conference.

Netflix hopes that rights for movies and TV series will shift from being sold locally in each country to globally, and expects that its plan to produce original TV series and movies will lead the way. By producing its own content Netflix can release it everywhere at the same time.


A global presence will also help Netflix negotiate better deals. If a studio wants to sell its new TV series or movie to Netflix it can be released in 50+ regions right away. That is a lot easier than having to negotiate with 50 separate partners, says Sarandos.

Speaking of content, Ted Sarandos says that the long-term goal is to release 20 new original TV series each year – or a new TV series every 2-3 week. Netflix has already proved that it can produce successful shows such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

Tomorrow, one of the most expensive TV series ever, Marco Polo, will be released on Netflix. In the coming months, Netflix will release House of Cards season 3, Bloodline (thriller), Daredevil (superhero series), Sense8 (sci-fi) and the Pablo Escobar-inspired Narcos.

Netflix has previously said that all future original TV series and movies will be produced in Ultra HD, even though the company recently increased the price for the monthly plan that gives access to UHD.
