Ang Lee's next movie to be shot in 120fps & 3D

Ang Lee, who directed Life of Pi with its amazing visual effects, will direct a war drama next. The director is planning on shooting it in 3D, high resolution and with an ultra-high frame rate of 120 pictures per second.

3D, HFR and high-resolution

One of the first movies to utilize high frame rate - or HFR - was Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Some people complained that the action on screen looked “too real”, but that might be exactly what Ang Lee is hoping to achieve with his next movie.

“Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” is an Iraq war drama. The story centers on Billy Lynn and fellow soldiers, who survive an intense battle in Iraq.

Ang Lee will be using Sony F65 cameras and shoot in 3D, high-resolution and with 120fps HFR to make you feel like you are right there in the war zone with the soldiers. The Hobbit was shot in 48fps. It is unclear if any movie theatres will be able to reproduce 120fps in all its glory, but the combination of these technologies can certainly take us to the next level after than the amazing visual effects of Life of Pi.

The Sony F65 cameras were also used on After Earth and Oblivion, but they were not released as HFR movies.

Shooting will start in April, but no release date has been set.
