Google has confirmed that Nexus Player will launch in the UK today, bringing with it the Android TV experience with apps, games and more. It can turn any TV into an “Android TV” for Ł79.
First Android TV device in Europe
This is the first Android TV-based product to hit Europe after Google launched its new platform in the US and Canada in late 2014. Android TV is the culmination of Google’s efforts to bring apps, games, and home automation to your living room.
The small black box offers streaming apps such as Netflix, Vevo, YouTube, and Sky News, and more will be available from the Google Play store in the near future. It also incorporates Google Cast, allowing you to use it as a “Chromecast” with services such as BBC iPlayer, BT Sport, NOW TV, and many more.
The box has support for HEVC and VP9 decoding and can connect to your home WiFi with the new, faster ac version of WiFi. It is connected to the TV with HDMI and supports up to 1080p resolution. Starting next month, Sony and Philips will introduce TVs with built-in Android TV.
Google says that Nexus Player will be available from the Google Store, Currys, PC World, Amazon, John Lewis, Argos and eBuyer starting today for Ł79. It is already listed at Amazon UK here. If you want to play games, too, you can buy the game controller for Ł35.
