Amazon is now streaming in HDR, beats Netflix

24 Jun 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

A few months ago, Amazon promised to bring high dynamic range to Prime subscribers. With the release of Mozart in the Jungle, the company has made good on its promise. It is now available to watch in HDR for owners of Samsung SUHD TVs.

Amazon Prime in 4K & HDR

Netflix was the first streaming provider to promise HDR content this year, but Amazon will be the first company to put action behind its words. You will need a Samsung SUHD TV (JS9500, JS9000 or JS8500) and a subscription to Amazon’s Prime Video service to start watching in HDR. Amazon is promising to bring HDR to more TV manufacturers later this year.

Amazon confirms that full season of “Mozart in the Jungle” and the pilot episode of “Red Oaks”, both Amazon originals, are available to stream in HDR that enhances highlights and makes shadows more distinct. No additional technical details on bitrate or color space were announced. The company also says that it now offers “hundreds of titles” in 4K Ultra HD.

Mozart in the Jungle
- "HDR is a technical innovation that provides a truly stunning viewing experience and we're thrilled to be the first to offer this unmatched picture quality," said Michael Paull, Vice President of Digital Video at Amazon. "We can't wait for our Prime members to watch and re-watch Mozart in the Jungle in HDR at no additional cost to their membership, and we look forward to adding more titles and devices that support HDR this year."

Amazon is working with Hollywood studios to expand the HDR catalogue, and will not charge a premium for access to 4K or HDR content for Prime subscribers.
