LG to launch world's first 4K HDR OLED TVs next week

26 Aug 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG will expand its OLED line-up next week at IFA 2015 in Berlin, the company confirms. Three new 4K HDR OLED TVs will be launched as well as one new HD OLED TV.

Update: Now listed on Amazon. 55" 55EF9500 here and 65" 65EF9500 here.

World’s first HDR OLED TVs

LG demonstrated beautiful 4K HDR on its OLED TV at CES, and has already confirmed that its current EG9600 will receive an update to enable HDR. But the new flat EF9500 and curved EG9200 models are the first OLEDs to come with HDR support built-in from the beginning.

HDR stands for high dynamic range and is considered the next step in picture quality after Ultra HD resolution.

- ”LG’s industry-leading OLED display technology ensures that images are displayed in perfect black as well as perfect colors. This is what makes OLED technology an ideal match for HDR content because only OLED panels can deliver the absolute black which makes the bright colors of HDR look even more impressive. OLED TVs are able to render the required HDR light range at lower peak brightness, resulting in an exceptional and more comfortable viewing experience. What’s more, LG’s HDR-capable OLED TVs allow consumers to view HDR content from both streaming content partners as well as external sources,” said LG.

LG OLED TVs

EF9500 is a flat 4K OLED series from LG. It was unveiled for the first time in January at CES. At IFA next week, LG will officially launch the 55” 55EF9500 and 65” 65EF9500. The US prices are $5,499 and $6,999, respectively.

At IFA, LG will also launch a cheaper 4K HDR OLED with the new 55” 55EG9200. FlatpanelsHD exclusively published the first details on this model last month. LG now confirms that it will indeed support high dynamic range and measure an incredibly slim 4.8 mm.

Lastly, LG will launch a new HD OLED called 55EG9100. It is as thin as the 55EG9200. All of the new models come with webOS 2.0 built-in.

FlatpanelsHD is in Berlin for IFA 2015 so stay tuned for more details and impressions. The four new TVs will be available next week in Germany, Korea, the US, and the UK with more markets to follow soon after.
