Nvidia likes to call it “Netflix for games”. Geforce Now is a streaming service for games designed for the big screen. For $8 dollars per month you have access to a library of semi-recent games and you can try it free for 3 months.

We've already tried Nvidia’s game streaming service during our Nvidia Shield review. Today, Nvidia is officially launching Geforce Now (previously Nvidia GRID). To use the service you must own an Nvidia Shield box, tablet or laptop.

Traditionally, you would need to install a game to play it. Nvidia believes that games are perfectly capable of being streamed, just like movies and TV series. By setting up big data centers around the world Nvidia can run practically any game and deliver it instantly to your TV. There are now three data centers in the US and two in Europe, Nvidia tells us. Press “play”, wait 30 seconds and you are in action.


The games are available in up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. Nvidia recommends 10 Mb/s for SD quality, 20 Mb/s for 720p HD and 60fps, and 50 Mb/s for 1080p and 60fps.

For $8 dollars or 10 Euro per month you can subscribe to a package that includes games such as Dirt 3, Batman: Arkham Origins/Asylum/City, The Witcher 2, F.E.A.R. 3 and several Lego games. It is also possible to purchase newer games separately for $30 and up. The list includes The Witcher 3, Mad Max, MotoGP15 and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.


Nvidia is not alone. Sony believes that the future of gaming lies in streaming. They are currently rolling out PlayStation Now across media players and Smart TVs. Another game streaming service, GameFly, also recently launched.

Geforce Now is available today and you can try it free for three months if you own an Nvidia Shield product.
