Sony's new XD93 TVs are now shipping

31 Mar 2016 | Rasmus Larsen |

The first TVs from Sony’s 2016 line-up have begun shipping the US and Europe. XD93 is this year’s “hero model”, says Sony. Prices have already begun to drop.

Slim Backlight Drive & Android TV

XD93 is one of two new high-end TVs from Sony in 2016. XD94 is the other and an extension of XD93 into larger screen formats, although with more advanced LCD technology. XD93 is available now and XD94 will follow in May/June.

Sony XD93

XD93 is built on Sony’s “Slim Backlight Drive”, which combines some of the advantages of thicker full-array LED LCDs with the slim profile of edge LED LCDs. Sony says that the new backlighting system will improve picture quality by enhancing contrast and blacks. XD93 also offers 4K resolution, HDR (high dynamic range) and 3D.

Like last year, Sony has integrated Google’s Android TV operating system. The app library is steadily expanding and you can stream in 4K quality from services such as Netflix and YouTube – and very soon HDR quality, too. XD93 also has a built-in twin tuner in Europe.

Sony XD94

Sony XD93 is available now in 55” and 65” sizes. XD94 will arrive in May/June in 75”.
