TCL unveils X1 flagship TV with HDR, FALD & Android TV

At IFA 2016, TCL has unveiled its new flagship TV, Xclusive X1. The TV comes packed with Ultra HD, HDR, full-array local dimming, HDR, and Android TV. With the TV, TCL hopes to gain a foothold in the high-end segment.

TCL showcased the TV for the first time at CES in Las Vegas back in January. At that time, TCL said that X1 would support Dolby Vision but that is no longer the case. However, besides that omission it matches high-end LCDs from more established brands.

TCL explains that X1 has been inspired by Scandinavian design. The lead designer for TCL is Danish. The curved 65” panel sets itself apart by using exposed speakers underneath and a back with “no screws or seams to maintain the elegant beauty of the product”.

The TV is 17.4 mm in depth but TCL has still managed to fit a full-array local dimming (FALD) system into the cabinet. FALD is normally used only on flagship LCD TVs such as Samsung KS9 or Panasonic DX900 and typically requires a quite thick design. TCL says that X1 is the ”slimmest HDR local dimming LCD TV”.

The TV has a total of 288 local dimming zones, which will help reproduce HDR (high dynamic range). The company says that it can reach up to 1500 nits brightness, which makes it one of the brightest LCD TVs out there. It can also reproduce 93% of the DCI-P3 color gamut by utilizing cadmium-free quantum dots.

The TV obviously has Ultra HD resolution.

Hopes to enter high-end segment

With X1, TCL hopes to gain a foothold in the high-end segment and compete with brands such as Samsung and Sony.

- “We have been investing heavily in innovation to create better TV products. We believe innovation will be rewarding. It will bring us to a new horizon and our users a better experience,” said Tomson Li, Chairman and CEO of TCL.

X1 also marks the beginning of a partnership between Google and TCL with the goal to bring Android TV to the Chinese’ manufacturers TVs.

The TV is equipped with Android TV version 6.0 at launch, unlike many other Android TVs on the market that are still stuck on version 5.1 Google released Android 7.0 - Nougat - a few weeks ago.

The 65'' TCL U65S9906 will be available in Europe in Q4 2016 for 4000 Euro.
