The new, more powerful game console from Sony launches today in Europe and the US. PlayStation 4 Pro is capable of delivering games in up to 4K UHD resolution and HDR (High Dynamic Range). It also supports streaming in the new video formats.
PlayStation 4 Pro now available
The new game console was unveiled on September 7 together with a cheaper Slim model. Pro has a graphics processor that is more than twice as powerful, enabling it to output “in up to 4K resolution” (but often lower and upscaled) and HDR. This will take console games to the next level, says Sony.
PS4 Pro arrives three years after the original PS4 and Sony stressed that it is not a new generation but instead a more powerful mid-generation PS4 upgrade, evidenced by the “Pro” moniker. All games that run on PS4 will also run on PS4 Pro – and vice versa.
The difference is that games will look visibly better on PS4 Pro if the game developer issues a software update to take advantage of the extra processing power. You can see which games have been updated to take advantage of PS4 Pro here.
- “The launch of PS4 Pro is an immensely exciting moment for PlayStation. Never before have we introduced a new console in the middle of a platform’s lifecycle,” said Jim Ryan, President of SIEE and President of Global Sales & Marketing, SIE “By providing developers with a new way to showcase their creativity, PS4 Pro enables us to prove our commitment to innovation, as well as deliver captivating gameplay experiences for the players.”
Streaming in 4K and HDR
The new game console also supports streaming in 4K and HDR quality. It will launch with apps for Netflix and YouTube that both support 4K streaming.
There is a built-in 1TB hard drive that can be replaced with a larger capacity hard drive. Another new feature is 5GHz “ac” WiFi, which is faster and more reliable than the “n” WiFi standard used in the original PS4.
If you already own a PS4 and is planning to upgrade to PS4 Pro, Sony has published a document detailing how to transfer game data between the two consoles.
PS4 Pro has a suggested retail price of $400 USD / 400 Euro. It is available now in Europe and the US.
