3 studios to bring out Dolby Vision UHD Blu-rays in "early 2017"

3 studios - Universal, Warner Bros, and Lionsgate - will bring out UHD Blu-ray titles with Dolby Vision in “early 2017”, the companies announced at CES 2017.

Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray

We met Dolby at the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas today and they were incredibly excited about how strong the momentum is for the Dolby Vision format. It was already available in the cinema, on streaming services, and now it is coming to discs.

Dolby believes that 2017 will be the “tipping point” for Dolby Vision in the home and from walking around on the CES show floors, it is hard to disagree.

Three studios have committed to release movies in Dolby Vision on UHD Blu-ray: Universal, Warner Bros, and Lionsgate. All three studios, as well as the other big studios, are already mastering movies in Dolby Vision for the cinema.

- ”Commitment from Lionsgate, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment for Dolby Vision Ultra HD Blu-ray content is a major milestone for expanded choice and accessibility for consumers,” said Curt Behlmer, Senior Vice President, Content Solutions and Industry Relations, Dolby Laboratories. "With Ultra HD Blu-ray, we are able to scale faster to meet the growing demand for Dolby Vision content globally.”

No specific titles were confirmed.

What about the rest?

While 3 studios is a strong start, it is not yet a home run.

Notably missing from the Blu-ray ecosystem is Disney. We had actually expected them to jump aboard when Dolby Vision launched on optical discs.

So, of course we asked. And of course, Dolby could not comment on Disney’s plans but Dolby did say that they are in talks with all of the studios to bring them on board. And perhaps more importantly; they sounded very optimistic about it happening.

Just imagine watching Inside Out in Dolby Vision at home. Perhaps soon you can.
