Panasonic's 2018 LCDs feature HDR10+ & glass design

13 Feb 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

Panasonic has unveiled its range of 2018 LCD TVs. FX780 and FX740 are “extremely thin, fashioned in glass and beautiful to look at from any angle”, the company said. All of the new LCD TVs will support HDR10+.

Panasonic will use OLED technology for its high-end TVs while LCD technology will be offered from the 7 series and down. There is no new high-end LCD to succeed the DX900 so Panasonic likes to refer to the FX780 and FX740 as “flagship” LCD TVs.

FX780 and FX740 are extremely thin, the company said, and are made from glass and other quality materials. The TVs will be available in 49 to 75 inch sizes. The company will also offer mid-range 49 to 65 inch options in the FX700 and FX600 ranges with a “switch design” that allows the user to adjust the width of the stand.

The entire range will have 4K resolution and support for HDR10+. Amazon’s HDR library will also be available to enjoy on Panasonic's 2018 TVs.

- ”Panasonic TVs, which support HDR10+ dynamic metadata technology, will also be able to stream the entire Amazon Prime Video HDR library in HDR10+. The Prime Video HDR10+ catalogue includes hundreds of hours of content such as Prime Originals The Grand Tour, Golden Globe-nominated The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Tick and The Man in the High Castle plus hundreds of licensed titles,” Panasonic said.

In addition to HDR10+, all of the TVs will support HDR10 and HLG. The former is the base format while the latter is a format for live broadcast/streaming. Panasonic currently has no plans to support Dolby Vision on its TVs, despite now having two UHD Blu-ray players with Dolby Vision capabilities.

Improved game mode

FX780 will include the same HCX video processor as the two new flagship OLED TVs. Panasonic explains that it has made improvements to HDR on LCD TVs by using LCD panels that deliver some 20 percent brighter peaks. However, the new OLED TVs will still deliver the premium HDR performance.

- “Satisfying the demands of the most proficient gaming enthusiasts, the lineup of 2018 LED screens features a 4K Game Mode with Panasonic’s quickest-ever response time, which ensures 4K HDR gamers enjoy the most engrossing experience ever. The ultra-fast mode has exceptionally quick image processing, which delivers crisp, finely detailed HDR images even with fast-moving 4K games that require quick reaction times,” the company added.

The company further said that a new ‘My Home Screen 3.0’ platform will make it “easier than ever to make your own customised home page” of apps and services. The platform is based on the foundation of Firefox OS but Panasonic has continued development in-house. In addition, all of the 2018 TVs will gain Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa compatible through a later firmware update - initially only in the UK and Germany.

FX780, FX740, FX700 and FX600 will be available in Europe this spring. Pricing details were not announced. FlatpanelsHD will later publish an overview of Panasonic’s full 2018 TV line-up.
