Sony unveils new mid-range LCD TVs for 2018

15 Feb 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sony Europe has unveiled new mid-range and low-end TVs for 2018 that will expand the line-up beyond what was announced at CES. XF80 and XF75 will come with Android TV whereas WF6 and RF4 will represent the low-end.

Besides the XF90 and XF85, Sony Europe will offer the XF80 and XF75 models. These are edge-lit LCD TVs, ranging from 43 to 65 inch sizes, with Android TV and 4K resolution.

Compared to the more expensive models, these TVs lack a twin-tuner. Sony says that the mid-range TVs are “HDR compatible”, and XF80 even features the ‘Triluminos’ system designed to increase peak brightness, but we know from experience that HDR requires full array local dimming at minimum.

The Android TV platform offers access to video streaming, games, and other types of apps, including the usual suspects such as Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube. The Chromecast protocol is also integrated, which allows you to cast video to the TV from a mobile device.

XF80 has an aluminum bezel whereas XF75 has a “slim rounded-edge bezel” design.

Additionally, Sony Europe will add the WF6 and RF4 ranges to the line-up. These are Full HD models without Android TV. However, WF6 still offers Netflix and YouTube apps.

Sony XF80, XF75, WF6 and RF4 will launch in Europe starting from March. Sony USA has yet to comment on the mid-range models. FlatpanelsHD will soon publish a full overview of Sony’s 2018 TV line-up.
