LG has started OLED mass production at new plant

LG Display has started mass production of AMOLED panels at their new 4.5 generation plant. The new AMOLED plant is going to focus on small size OLED panels for handheld devices.

LG AMOLED mass production

LG has posted millions of dollars into their new 4.5 generation AMOLED plant that is now online in stage one. This means that LG will have a monthly capacity of 4000 substrates from which smaller panels can be cut.

The aim is to increase the production capacity to 12,000 substrates by the end of 2011. 12,000 substrates can be cut into approximately 1.5 million 3-inch panels a month.

The new plant will primarily manufacture small size AMOLED panels for mobile phones and other handheld devices. A recent report noted that Nokia is one of the clients. Besides LG Electronics, the report also says that three other buyers are in the picture. One of these could be Apple that has invested heavily in LG’s OLED capacity some time ago. According to reports Apple has invested around $800 million US dollars in LG’s display division.

Even though the new 4.5 AMOLED plant is able to manufacture OLED-TV panels, it’s not perfect for a large scale OLED-TV roll-out. LG is also building an 8 generation OLED plant that should be ready for mass production in 2013. An 8G plant or higher is required for mass production of TV panels.
