- Direct LED where the LEDs are placed behind the LCD panel and light is evenly distributed with a light diffuser method
- Direct LED with zone control (or FALD) where the LEDs are placed behind the LCD panel in X number of zones, and evenly distributed through segments of light diffusers, Zones are typically ranging from very few to around a couple of hundreds zones.
Samsung seesm to be moving ahead with a method to place an microLED array behind the LCD panel. This may increase the number of zones but it is still in the same category as the third one above.
The backlight control plays a major role in terms of black level.
Different LCD panel types also manage to block light to various degrees. IPS LCD is worst, VA LCD is best in this regard. As you know, Panasonic has also developed a dual-layer LCD panel that can block light more effectively in the LC layer of the LCD sandwich.
The ideal display is one where light can be controlled on the pixel level. That would be self-emitting display technologies such as OLED, microLED, and QD-LED.
