Update: DTS:X is coming to new LG OLED and premium LCD TVs

05 Jan 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

At CES 2023, Xperi has announced a partnership with LG Electronics to integrate DTS:X immersive audio into LG's latest OLED and premium LCD TV models.
Update 27.1.2023: LG Korea has provided the following statement to FlatpanelsHD: "2023 LG TVs from the QNED85 and up plus all OLED TVs will decode the DTS, DTS:X and Imax Enhanced Audio CODECs for the purposes of sending them to an external Audio device that also support these CODECs. LG is not promising that the TV speakers will play back the audio."
Now, here's a plot twist and we have a lots of questions to LG and DTS that we are still trying to get answered. The information comes via a press release from Xperi, the company behind DTS. - "Xperi Inc. today announced a partnership with LG Electronics to integrate DTS:X immersive audio technology into LG’s latest OLED and Premium LCD TVs." - "DTS is enabling a new level of audio experience, bringing the quality sound consumers expect in a theater to the home," said Jea Yoo, president of Korea at Xperi. "We’re excited to help transform the listening experience of LG TV users."

The press release mentions only DTS:X. There is no information on how this relates IMAX Enhanced DTS audio – or any other DTS audio formats for that matter – but it is clear that the wheels are in motion following yesterday's announcement that IMAX DTS is coming to Disney+. It could be the solution that LG Electronics confirmed to FlatpanelsHD earlier this week where DTS cannot be decoded on the TV itself but instead work as bitstream passthrough to a compatible IMAX Enhanced soundbar that will handle decoding. But again, we are not yet sure about the exact details.

LG Electronics has confirmed the news: - "We are pleased to announce that DTS:X immersive audio technology will be integrated into our latest OLED and Premium LCD TVs," said SP BAIK, Vice President of HE Product Planning, LG Electronics. "With DTS:X, we will be able to deliver cinematic experience to our consumers." While Dolby audio is supported in basically any TV model today, DTS support is missing from many TV brands' models. Xperi said that the partnership with LG "represents a significant milestone in DTS’s journey to embed DTS:X technology in more devices".
