Philips introduces LED Lux backlighting in 9803H

15 Dec 2008 | Philips |

In the TV performance world, deep blacks and high contrast make a large contribution to the overall image quality seen on screen. The new 42PFL9803H is the first LCD flat TV to feature Philips unique, intelligent LED backlight system giving a 50 fold increase in Dynamic contrast and producing a staggering 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio - for a truly exceptional picture.

The 42PFL9803H is a landmark set. Traditionally, LCD TVs have proven superior to plasma sets in terms of sharpness, brightness and pure white reproduction, and more recently for smooth motion replay, but have lagged behind in one area: the production of the deepest black levels.

With the launch of the 42PLF9803H Philips has produced a set with all of the benefits of LCD technology but with black levels and a contrast ratio to beat the best plasma TVs.

The 42PFL9803H replaces the normal fluorescent tube back light currently found in LCD sets with a total of 1152 LEDs arranged in eight rows and divided into 16 segments per row – giving a total of 128 segments – with each segment containing nine individual LEDs.

In conventional LCD sets, all of the fluorescent tubes can be dimmed together, but not individually and they cannot be switched off completely. In addition, light tends to be brighter at the centre of the screen than at the edges.

With the LED Lux backlight, each segment can be individually dimmed or even switched off completely, allowing the dark parts of an image to become darker and the bright parts to become brighter; delivering a 50 fold increase in Dynamic Contrast ratio at an astonishing 2,000,000:1.

Not only does the new 42PFL9803 offer the unique LED LUX Backlighting technology, but it also features a host of ground-breaking Philips technologies, including the latest generation of the Perfect Pixel HD engine and the immersive Ambilight Spectra system.

100 Hz Clear LCD with 2ms response time
The 42PFL9803 is also the world’s fastest LCD courtesy of the 100Hz Clear LCD system and a 2 millisecond response time which banishes the motion blur problem common with most other LCD TVs. 100Hz Clear LCD creates extreme motion sharpness for clear and vibrant images even with fast on-screen action.

Perfect Pixel HD Engine
The latest Perfect Pixel HD engine processes 500 million pixels per second (double the performance of its predecessor), to deliver unrivalled sharpness and detail. Each pixel of the incoming picture is enhanced to better match the surrounding pixels, delivering a more natural and lifelike picture.

The Perfect Colours feature is a combination of new colour sources, advanced colour processing and a Wide Colour Gamut display. The powerful 17-bit Colour Booster technology pumps out a mesmerizing 2,250 trillion colours, producing brilliant life-like images with natural skin and white tones.

The Wide Colour Gamut panel and x.v. Wide Colour HDMI input can also display the most vivid and vibrant colours.

Perfect Natural Motion ensures judder-free and razor sharp images - particularly critical with 1080p/24 source material. Perfect Natural Motion estimates motion in the picture and corrects juddering movements in both broadcast and recorded movie material (e.g., DVD and Blu-ray Disc). Perfect Natural Motion results in smoother and quieter pictures with excellent sharpness.

Ambilight Spectra 2
The 42PFL9803H also boasts Philips immersive Ambilight Spectra 2 technology, which accurately identifies dominant on-screen colours and generates accurately-matched ambient lighting from both sides of the screen onto a rear wall.

Each side of the Ambilight Spectra system independently generates a series of colours that match to a corresponding part of the picture on screen, rather than a single block of colour on the left and right side. Ambilight Spectra 2 also adjusts the timing of its LED’s to help enhance onscreen motion.

Connectivity
Easy to use and set-up, the 42PFL9803 boasts four HDMI 1.3a EasyLink inputs to ensure easy connectivity between HDMI devices and also features an Ethernet port enabling access to the PC and networked content.

Price and availibility
The 42PFL9803H will be available in November for an estimated selling price of ÂŁ2299.
