CES 2010: First 21:9 TV from Vizio is 58-inches

13 Jan 2010 | Rasmus Larsen |

Vizio presents their new 58-inch LCD-TV XVTPRO580CD in 21:9 aspect ratio. It’s the second 21:9 flat panel TV to hit the market after Philips introduced their Cinema 21:9 last year.

58-inch Vizio TV 21:9

The 21:9 aspect ratio is used in cinemas worldwide and most new premiere movies are shot in an aspect ratio close to 21:9. The 21:9 aspect ratio has been utilized on projectors for several years, but recently Philips introduced the world's first 21:9 TV. Now Vizio follow in Philips' footsteps and is launching a 2 inch larger 21:9 TV called XVTPRO580CD.

The 58-inch is 2-inches larger than Philips Cinema 21:9 but has the same resolution of 2560x1080 pixels. The Vizio 21:9 incorporates a LCD panel by panel manufacturer AUO which recently announced that they would produce 21:9 panels. This also enables other manufacturers than Vizio to introduce 21:9 format TVs in 2010.

Vizio is one of the major U.S. TV manufacturers and unlike Philips Cinema 21:9, Vizio’s 21:9 TV has a LED backlight. Vizio states that the TV has a 1.000.000:1 dynamic contrast ratio due to local dimming as well as 120 Hz and wireless network capability.

The remote is driven by the Bluetooth system which means that you don’t need to point directly at the TV in order to switch channels. The remote also has a QWERTY keyboard.

Vizio’s new 21:9 flat panel TV is aimed at movie enthusiasts that wants to watch movies in the 2.35:1 format (21:9) at home. We can’t help thinking that maybe a projector would be a wiser choice, though...

Vizio 21:9 XVTPRO580CD hits the U.S. later this year. The price has not been announced.
