FlatpanelsHD attended Philips’ launch of their 2010 line-up in Barcelona. Here we got the chance to look at all of the new flat panel TV ranges and 3D. We also got some hands-on experiences with the new 3D Cinema 21:9 that will be launched Q3 2010.
Below you find a lot of actual pictures of the new Philips products along with our impressions and video presentation of all the separate ranges. Prices and dates will be revealed later on.
Philips will be updating their entire range of flat panel TVs this year with new low-end, mid-end and high-end products. You can expect new 3000, 5000, 7000, 8000 og 9000 models, and in the summer of 2010 Philips will launch their new 3D Cinema 21:9 that we have more information on in a later separate article.
Philips 9705H
Philips has - like the other flat panel manufacturers - big plans for 3D. Philips will take a different approach to the 3D market, however, and introduce so-called 3D Ready TVs. This means that you buy the actual TV and later on you’ll have the opportunity to buy a 3D set with a 3D infrared transmitter (used for synchronizing 3D glasses) and 3D glasses. 3D will be possible with the 9000 and 8000 series, and with the new 3D Cinema 21:9.
Philips 9705H
Philips has decided to make 3D possible even on 32-inch TVs which is quite different from the other manufacturers that seem to suggest that bigger is better. We also had the chance to see 3D on an early prototype of the 9000 series. I felt that even though the 3D effect was there Philips had too much cross-talk (the two pictures blurred together) and less feeling of 3D depth than I have seen on the Samsung and Panasonic 3DTVs. But hey, it’s an early prototype and things can change. At least the 3D demonstration on IFA 2009 on the Cinema 21:9 by Philips was much more promising.
Philips 8605H
This year Philips emphasize their NET TV service that gives you access to the internet. Philips wants to introduce new internet services and new partnerships that differ from one country to another.

Also, Philips will allow yours to browse the internet on their own with the built-in browser. Check out the video below where Philips explains NET TV:
Philips will also introduce a cool new feature called Wi-Fi Media Connect. Basically this service allows you to transfer the picture from your laptop or PC to the TV - wirelessly.
You just install a small piece of software on your laptop and then you tell it to transfer the image. There is some delay and it didn’t seem to support high frame rates but it’s cool for showing something from your laptop on the TV quickly and easy. The idea is that you remove the many buttons that you never use anyway and gives some of the other buttons more functions.

For example, the “Browse”-button has different uses. So when you’re checking out images from an USB stick the Browse button will return you to the folder structure but when you use it on the NET TV interface it gives you access to browse the internet.
Inputs on the back are now facing downwards to enable you to wall mount the TV close to the wall. Philips will still have some inputs/output that points out towards the wall, however, but these are intended for user that do not wall mount the TV. Also, the stand from the high-end series can be transformed into a swivel wall mounting solution.
Philips 8605H
Philips will also introduce some new picture circuits. The LED Pro system will be incorporated in the new 9705H even though we weren’t exactly tripping about this system on the current 9704H that we reviewed. The LED Pro system is a LED backlight with local dimming. This year Philips presents Bright Pro in the 9000 series. Bright Pro enables Philips to increase light output on the LCD panel with local dimming LED to a much higher level than before.
On the 2009 model 9704H peaked at around 500 cd/m2 but this year on the 9705H peak brightness will be 1000 cd/m2. The combination of LED Pro and Bright Pro enables Philips to show very dark blacks and very bright colours simultaneously.
Philips Ambilight
Ambilight will continue and this year Philips gives users the opportunity to adjust Ambilight according to the colour of the wall. So if you have a dark blue wall Ambilight can adapt to that to ensure that the right colours are displayed.

9000 series
The 9000 series is the new flagship model from Philips with LED Pro, Bright Pro, 400 Hz (200 Hz and scanning backlight) and 3D. Check out the video below where Philips is telling us about the 9705H:

The 8000 series has the 8605H model that is the step down from the 9000 series. 8605H features 3D, 200 Hz but no LED local dimming technologies.

Questions
- I heard the new models would be glossy Sharp UV2A panels? While current models are Matte right? can someone check in Barcelona ? :) The panels are still matte. :)
- Ok,"The 3D upgrade pack is available for the Cinema 21:9," Sounds to me like they are saying the EXISTING one can have 3D added? No unfortunately not. 3D requires a much faster panel (with more Hz) and HMDI 1.4 input. The 2009 ranges are not 3D Ready.
