Samsung has exhibited transparent screens in the past – including this <a href=http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1274769540 target=_blank><b>19” model</b></a>. At the SID 2011 exhibition Samsung demonstrated their first 22-inch PC monitor with a transparent LCD panel. Samsung has planned a market launch for Q3 2011. <br /><br /><h3>Samsung’s transparent display</h3>Transparent screens are no longer science fiction. In 2011 we will see the first actual products with transparent displays on the market.<br /><br /><p align=center><a id="thumb" href="pictures/samsung22transparent-2l.jpg" class="highslide" rel="highslide"><img class="imgresponsive" src="pictures/samsung22transparent-2.jpg" alt="Transparent 22 inch monitor" title="Click to enlarge" /></a><br><i>Transparent 22 inch monitor, source: Engadget.com</i></p><br />At SID 2011 in Los Angeles Samsung exhibited this 22 inch PC monitor. Samsung did not specifiy exactly what ”the market” covers, but Samsung told Engadget.com that they are have started shipping these 22 inch LCD panels to customers this week and that they expect to have the first products for sale in the third quarter of 2011.<br /><br />The LCD panel is not 100% transparent and objects behind the screen appear darker than they are because some light is blocked. Samsung says that they can make transparent panel with or without backlight units, and we presume that Samsung is using Edge LED to illuminate the screen. Samsung has exhibited better transparent screens in the past with <a href=http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1274769540 target=_blank><b>OLED technology</b></a>. <br /><br />The transparent monitor is obviously not very suitable for typical PC usage but Samsung hopes to use it for advertising purposes or in shop windows.<br /><br />Tech site Engadget.com has shot a video of the transparent 22 inch monitor below.<br /><p align=Center><object style="height: 305px; width: 500px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IWmWTIPrkDI?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IWmWTIPrkDI?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="500" height="305"></object></p><br /><i>Source: <a href=http://www.engadget.com target=_blank>Engadget.com</a></i>
