Apple iPad 3 with Retina display
The rumors about a extremely high-resolution iPad 3 were true. Apple has just unveiled their new tablet in San Francisco and FlatpanelsHD tell you everything you need to know about the new display inside.
The new iPad has a Retina display
The display utilizes an extremely high 2048x1536 pixel resolution, which means that it quadruples the pixel count of the iPad 2. Apple calls it a Retina display and it will make objects on the iPad 3 appear extremely detailed. Because the resolution is twice in the vertical and horizontal axis it also means that the iOS looks exactly the same and app icons have the same size – they screen is just much more detailed.
The new iPad has a Retina display
The size and resolution equals 264 ppi (pixels per inch), which is the highest on any tablet today. If you are counting pixels, it has approximately 1 million more pixels than you Full HD flat panel TV. Apple defines it as "Retina" because pixel density exceeds the eye's ability to distinguish details, which ensures "perfect sharpness" (based on a viewing distance of 15 inches / 38 centimeters).
Apple still uses the so-called IPS panel, which is often associated with great color reproduction (Apple boasts improved color saturation) and wide viewing angles. IPS is a LCD panel technology and Apple has used a power-efficient edge LED backlight system behind the screen.
The Retina display was demonstrated with visually-striking games
Apple iPad 3 also features an A5X chip with dual-core processor and quad-core graphics, 5 megapixel camera, 4G LTE, and voice dictation (slimmed-down Siri). It comes in 16, 32 and 64 GB.
iPad 3 can use the AirPlay to stream content to the TV screen via the Apple TV box
Apple iPad 3 will be available in the US (and 9 more countries) on March 16 with a $499 price. It will be available in other countries later. iPad 2 will still be available and now costs $399.
Apple ends the announcement with "2012 - There's a lot to look forward to".
