Sony is rolling out 4K TVs in a few months and here is one of the first players to take advantage of the Ultra HD format.

FMP-X1 has a hard drive inside that can store movies. Sony plans to open an online store that will allow viewers to buy and download movies in the 4K movie format. Sony previously said that the movie service would debut this summer but the launch has been delayed to fall 2013, confirms Sony. Existing owners of the media player bundled with Sony’s 84” 4K TV can exchange to the FMP-X1 free of cost.

The media player can also playback movies from external USB devices or a SD card. It obviously also plays conventional Full HD.

10 movies in 4K resolution are included with the purchase: Bad Teacher, Battle: Los Angeles, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Karate Kid (2010), Salt, Taxi Driver, That’s My Boy, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Other Guys and Total Recall (2012).

Sony FMP-X1 will be available sometime this summer for $699. A European introduction has not been confirmed.
