This is not the first flexible OLED display we have seen but at the annual SID conference, LG is showing off a new flexible 5-inch OLED display. LG plans to launch the first smartphone with a flexible plastic OLED display in 2013.

Flexible OLED displays coming

Samsung has showcased flexible OLED displays in the past and at SID LG also has a flexible OLED display to show off. The OLED display is based on a plastic substrate, making in bendable, extremely lightweight and extremely durable.

LG promises to launch a smartphone with a plastic based OLED display in 2013. That does not necessarily mean that LG’s smartphone will be bendable but instead that the display is thinner and more durable than typical displays, to avoid it from breaking.

LG was not the only manufacturer that had news to share on flexible OLED displays at SID. Panasonic and Toshiba also announced flexible OLEDs but had no prototypes to showcase. Toshiba’s OLED display is 10.2 inches large and Panasonic has developed a 4 inch version.
