Throughout 2013, Sony has made several references to <a href=http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1372841645><b>its 4K movie service</b></a> that will launch later in 2013. But the first movie in 4K resolution has instead been distributed to a REDRay player through Odemax, a platform created by the company called RED. Odemax is still in beta.<br /><br /><h3>First 4K movie sent to a REDray player</h3>RED is famous and well-liked for its small and capable professional video cameras that have taken on the big boys in the Hollywood industry. RED’s cameras were used to film for example The Hobbit.<br /><br />RED would like to expand their platform so they recently launched the <a href=http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1372839490><b>REDRay 4K Player</b></a> and is building the online platform Odemax. Through Odemax consumers can buy and rent movies, TV shows and documentaries and eventually the platform could also open up to third-party providers such as YouTube or Netflix.<br /><br /><p align=center><a id="thumb" href="pictures/odemax-3l.jpg" class="highslide" rel="highslide"><img class="imgresponsive" src="pictures/odemax-3.jpg" alt="Odemax" title="Click to enlarge" /></a><br><i>The Odemax platform is accessible from RED’s 4K player</i></p><br />Through Odemax the first movie in 4K resolution has been delivered to a consumer. It was the short film The Ballad of Danko Jones with Elijah Wood. The movie is 23 minutes long and the file is said to have been a 4 GB download that was sent to an owner of the REDRay 4K player. RED says that the movie was compressed at an average level and they expect to deliver full feature-length movies as 18-20 GB files. RED has also discussed the possibility of streaming 4K movies instead of having to wait for the download process to finish.<br /><br />Odemax is still in beta and will be opened to more beta testers this week. There is still no official launch date and no price details regarding movie rentals or purchases have been announced. The REDRay Player currently runs for $1750 USD – and then you obviously also need an <a href=4kultrahd.php><b>Ultra HD TV</b></a>.
