Skyworth promised to launch the first Chinese-branded OLED TV in Q2 2014, and they will follow up on that promise. The new OLED TV is shipping now in China. It has been dubbed the Tianchi E980 and has a LG OLED panel inside.
Chinese OLED TVs – with LG panels
Chinese TV makers have become some of the world’s largest due to the booming Chinese economy. Unfortunately, we will not see their OLED TVs outside China right now, but it is noteworthy that they are moving to the front of TV innovation - with a little help from LG.
We spotted several Chinese OLED TVs during CES 2014, but Skyworth beats them all to market. Skyworth’s OLED TV is, like the other TV, based on a Full HD OLED panel produced by LG.Display. LG is selling OLED panels to other TV makers in an effort to ramp up to mass-production scale. LG is also cherry picking partners among the Chinese TV makers, avoiding selling their new technology to other Korean and even Japanese TV makers that have been LG’s main rivals for years.
Skyworth had originally planned to launch a flat OLED TV in Q2, but they have announced that the Tianchi E980 will in fact be a curved OLED TV. The TV bezel is just 1 mm and the OLED panel is 7 mm in depth. It also looks kind of familiar, doesn’t it?
