Samsung’s head of the TV business says that the company has no plans to release new OLED TVs in 2014 or 2015. Instead, Samsung will focus on quantum dot LCD TVs and Ultra HD.

Will focus on quantum dot LCD TV
LG is already producing and selling OLED TVs and is increasing production aggressively. But big brother Samsung is still struggling with OLED TV technology, despite its production of OLED displays for mobile devices.

Samsung’s head of the TV business told reporters in Seoul that it is still too early for a big OLED rollout, according to CNET.

- " strategy on OLED TV this year as well as next year remains unchanged," said Kim Hyun-seok, head of Samsung’s TV business.


LG is using a different OLED pixel structure than Samsung, which has allowed them to improve production efficiency much faster than Samsung. LG has reached 80% yields on OLED TV production, and says that OLED TVs can become cheaper than LCD TVs.

Samsung is said to be exploring new production methods for OLED TVs, including inkjet printing. However, those new production methods are not ready for mass production yet.

Instead, Samsung will focus on Ultra HD resolution and quantum dot LCD TVs. Quantum dot technology can improve the color gamut of TVs, but in order to utilize the wider gamut movie makers also need to produce movies in beyond-HD color gamuts. 

Samsung’s quantum dot LCD TVs will be revealed at CES 2015. Samsung did not comment on the future of curved TVs.

Sony has sold quantum dot LCD TVs since 2013.
