GoPro streaming comes to Smart TVs, starting with LG

The GoPro action cameras are wildly popular, and soon you will be able to follow extreme sports and other content filmed with GoPro from an app on your Smart TV. LG and its webOS platform is the first TV partner, but GoPro has grander ambitions for 4K and live streaming.

The GoPro streaming service is already available on Xbox One and 360, and at CES 2015 the company announced the first major initiative in bringing the extreme sports content to Smart TVs. All 2014 and 2015 LG webOS TVs will be able to download the app.

GoPro says that more than 400 hours of HD is available now. 4K content will be available in a future update, and GoPro is also gearing up to start streaming live content from sports competitions. The first live broadcast will be from the Winter X Games 2015 by utilizing a small “broadcast-grade” transmitter that connects to the GoPro camera. It will be available to everyone in spring 2015.

- “The GoPro Channel App will enable millions of LG Smart TV owners to experience life’s most incredible moments as captured on our HERO cameras.” said GoPro Head of Programming and Distribution, Adam Dornbusch.

Several playlists will be available, including Top Picks, Deep Sea, Wild Animals, Short Films, Full Throttle and Behind the Scenes.

Expect to hear more about GoPro’s streaming service ambitions in the near future.
