Just like Netflix, Amazon will start streaming movies and TV series in glorious HDR (high dynamic range) later this year. Amazon Originals will be the first to arrive in HDR.
High dynamic range
4K was the first step. The next one is HDR (high dynamic range) that can vastly improve contrast in video; brighter white and deeper and more nuanced blacks. The first Ultra HD TVs to support HDR will launch later this year, but at the moment there is no content available.
That will change once movie studios and distributors start supporting the initiative, and Amazon expects to do that later this year with its original movies and TV series. Later, Amazon will also offer HDR movies and TV series from other studios.
- “4K Ultra HD picture resolution was just the beginning—we’re excited that Prime members will soon be able to view movies and TV shows including Amazon Originals in HDR quality,” said Michael Paull, Vice President of Digital Video at Amazon. - “HDR is the natural next step in our commitment to premium entertainment, and we can’t wait for customers to have even more choice in how they watch their favorite titles on Amazon Prime Instant Video.”
HDR is coming to Prime subscribers in the US, the UK, and Germany. Amazon has not yet named any titles.
