Yamaha launches first Dolby Atmos soundbar, YSP-5600

24 Aug 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

Yamaha has unveiled the YSP-5600, which is the first soundbar to incorporate next-generation audio format Dolby Atmos, and later DTS:X via a firmware upgrade. It has a total of 44 speakers integrated. It also supports MusicCast.

Next-generation audio is what many refer to as “object-based audio”. It can place sound “objects” in the room by using advanced algorithms and speakers. Yamaha claims to be able to do it with just a soundbar – or “Digital Sound Projector”.

The YSP-5600 has 44-speakers built-in, including 12 “height channel” speakers and two 4.5-inch subwoofers. It can recreate 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos sound by bouncing sound off the walls in your living room. A microphone and a controller app are used to setup the sound stage. However, the end result depends on your room’s layout.

The soundbar will receive a firmware update that enables DTS’s objects-based system DTS:X later. To enjoy the Dolby Atmos and DTS:X experiences you also need movies encoded in the new formats.

At the same time, Yamaha is rolling out a new multi-room system named MusicCast. It is compatible with up to 10 speakers and can receive music from almost any source, including Airplay and Bluetooth. It supports 24bit sound and lossless audio files. The YSP-5600 soundbar also supports 4K60 video pass-through.

Yamaha YSP-5600 will be available in Europe and the UK for Ł1599.95 in September and the US for $1,699.95 in December.
