At IFA 2015, Samsung unveiled its first Ultra HD Blu-ray player. It will be available in early 2016 with a curved design to match its wide line-up of curved TVs.
Samsung’s UHD Blu-ray player
Finally, after Panasonic and Sony came and left the stage with no mention of Ultra HD Blu-ray, Samsung announced that it will launch one early next year. That is certainly not as soon as we had hoped but it is better than nothing.
The design will be curved, which makes little sense, but Samsung says it was designed this way to match its curved TVs. The Ultra HD Blu-ray player will of course be capable of playing beautiful movies in 4K, HDR, high bitrate and a wider color gamut. Few details were announced by Samsung but we already know the UHD Blu-ray specs.
The player is also compatible with 4K streaming services.
Fantastic Four, Maze Runner, and Kingsman: The Secret Service will be among the first releases on Ultra HD Blu-ray but Fox was on stage to tell us to expect many more soon.
To connect the player to a TV you need at least one HDMI 2.0a port, at least if you want to enjoy beautiful 4K HDR quality. Non HDR TVs will ignore the HDR data, which means that HDMI 2.0 ports are fine.
