Apps for the new Apple TV
The new Apple TV has an App Store and once it hits the market you will be able to download apps and games just like on iPhone.
Major apps such as iTunes, Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu and YouTube will be available from day one. Apple also highlighted non-video apps such as Gilt, Zillow, Madefire, and Airbnb. It will be interesting to see if other types of apps can work on the big screen.
It has been confirmed that the teams behind Plex and VLC are working on bringing apps to the new Apple TV to allow you to play videos stored on your home network. Apple Music will also come to Apple TV.
Games on Apple TV
When Nintendo launched the Wii console back in 2006, they said that the mission was to expand the console gaming market. Apple is also trying to appeal to the masses. The new Apple TV is not as powerful as the latest PlayStation and Xbox consoles but could still prove successful by replicating the iPhone and iPad gaming approach. Over time – with new versions of the box - graphics performance will improve.
At the launch event, Apple highlighted a few titles, including Rayman Adventures, the new Guitar Hero, Disney Infinity, Crossy Road and Beat Sports, but there is obviously much more potential here. tvOS is apparently 95% based on iOS, meaning that many games can be ported from mobile iOS devices.
Activision will bring several games to Apple TV. Besides the new Guitar Hero, it will release Geometry Wars 3 and Skylanders SuperChargers. If you have kids you probably know that Skylanders is a pretty popular title.
Major titles have yet to be announced but if Apple TV becomes a hot seller more studios will likely jump on board, possibly even with exclusives. iOS games such as Angry Birds, built for touch, will not really work on the big screen but many other indie titles that are available on game consoles and iOS will surely follow. None of the following great titles have been confirmed but could easily run on the Apple TV; Limbo, Machinarium, Leo's Fortune, The Journey Down, BioShock, Final Fantasy, Broken Age, Calvino Noir, The Walking Dead, Minecraft, older GTA titles, and Ocean Horn.
At some point in the near future, we may even start seeing streaming game services on Apple TV. Sony is currently rolling out PlayStation Now and Nvidia is rolling out Nvidia GRID. There is also GameFly. These services allow you to stream games; often referred to as “Netflix for games” subscription services.
