Google unveils new YouTube Red subscription service

22 Oct 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

After months of rumors, Google has finally unveiled its new subscription service for YouTube. It is called YouTube Red and for $10 dollars a month you can enjoy YouTube without ads, watch exclusive content and access extra features.

YouTube Red without ads

Today, most videos on YouTube are accompanied by ads. By subscribing to YouTube Red you can get access to the full catalogue of content without any advertisement. The service will be available starting next week on October 28th.

In addition to an ads-free YouTube subscribers will gain access to addition features. It will be possible to download all videos and playlists onto your mobile device for when you are offline. The subscription service will also work with YouTube Gaming and YouTube Music; a new app unveiled today. Subscribing to YouTube Red will also give you access to Google Play Music - and vice versa.

YouTube Red

Early next year, YouTube Red will include exclusive content by YouTube stars, including PewDiePie and CollegeHumor. The ten first “Originals” have already been announced and more will be added along the way. TechCrunch reports that there have been some skepticism among YouTube contributors but that Google has forced them to sign a contract to make their content available on Red or see their content set to “private”, effectively removing it from the public. Google argues that its is to ensure that content is available on both services, and adds that 99% of the contributors have signed up.

YouTube Red will launch in the US on October 28th with a free one month trial. After that it will cost $9.99 dollars a month, which is the same price as Netflix. The service will roll out to more countries “soon”.
