LG installs "world's largest" OLED screen in South Korean airport

LG calls it the “world’s largest OLED display”, which is a matter of definition since it is actually made from 140 55-inch OLED displays stitched together. It is an effort to spread awareness about OLED.

If you visit Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, in the near future be sure to look up. Above you is the “world’s largest OLED display”, says LG.

The screen is not one large display but instead 140 55-inch curved OLED panels with a tiny black borders in between. It is 13 by 8 meters and equivalent to three shipping containers. LG has not said whether it is using 4K or HD panels but assuming it is HD the screen would have 290 million pixels in total; 290 million tiny light emitting diodes that can each be addressed individually.

- “While the world’s largest OLED sign is certainly something to be proud of, we are more excited about the opportunity to introduce travelers from across the world to the magic of OLED,” said Ro Se-yong, SVP and head of B2B solutions at LG. “The benefits of OLED technology can only be viewed, they cannot be described with mere words.”

These are the kinds of display installations that LG imagines OLED will be perfect for. Future OLED panels will be paper-thin and bendable (even transparent), making almost anything possible. LG has installed the giant screen in collaboration with French design firm Wilmotte & Associes and Incheon Airport in an effort to promote OLED technology, which LG believes is the future.

If nothing else, we guess we can be happy about the fact that LG clearly has plenty of OLED panels to spare. That hopefully leads to lower prices soon.
