The Force Awakens will be released online first, then on discs

The new Star Wars movie will be released for sale next month. Surprisingly, Disney has decided to release it through online services such as iTunes before it hits Blu-ray and DVD. UHD Blu-ray is not mentioned with a word.

First online, then on discs

Unlike many other players in the movie business, Disney is not afraid to embrace the internet. The company recently released all Star Wars titles in “Digital HD” for the first time, and it has now decided to release Star Wars: The Force Awakens through online stores such as iTunes and Amazon before the movie is released on discs.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Disney’s support for physical disc formats appears to be fading. Some had hoped that Disney would use Star Wars to help ignite the new UHD Blu-ray format but an UHD Blu-ray release is not part of the launch plans. However, a 3D Blu-ray version (in HD) of Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released this summer.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be available to buy through online services from April 1. The disc release will follow on April 5. The release dates for Europe have yet to be announced but rumors say that it will hit Europe on April 11 (online) and April 18 (discs), respectively. No plans for rental have been announced.

The movie purchase will include a bunch of extra material.
