There are already lots of options for enjoying videos stored on a local hard drive via Apple TV. In recent months, we have witnessed the release of Plex, Infuse, MrMC (Kodi port) and VLC.

Here is one more for the owners of Synology NAS devices.

With DS Video you can enjoy all the videos stored on your Synology NAS on the living room TV. The network drives are capable transcoding video, too, so you even can watch video encoded in formats not supported natively on Apple TV. The DS Video app supports AC3 audio pass-through and subtitles, too. It also offers settings for video quality.

- “Use DS video to stream your video collection on your DiskStation from your Apple TV device. Browsing is made easy as your videos are sorted in different libraries, and each movie has its information retrieved online automatically. And if you have plugged in a DTV dongle to your DiskStation, you will also be able to record TV programs, as well as view the TV program to manage the recording schedule even when on the move”, Synology wrote in its release notes.

The app requires users to have version 1.5 of Synology’s Video Station software installed on the NAS.

DS Video is available for free on the tvOS App Store.
