Netflix launches Flixtape; like a mixtape, but for video

Netflix usually recommends new content based on algorithms. But what if you want to create your own playlist to share with family and friends? Solution: Flixtapes.

Flixtapes are video playlists

A Flixtape is like a mixtape, but for video on Netflix, says the company. The idea is to offer the viewer an easy way to create playlists that can be saved or shared with friends and family via social media.

Netflix Flixtapes

- “Flixtape is a short playlist of Netflix titles based around a theme, a mood, or message. It’s like a mixtape, but for Netflix,” the company wrote.

Netflix will suggest a variety of “made for you” Flixtapes such as "The Documentaries Flixtape", "The Mixed Taste Flixtape" and "The Seasons Flixtape”. It looks like these playlists are based on what you have seen on Netflix in the past.

You can also create your own Flixtapes. You start by giving the playlist a name and based on the name Netflix will suggest three titles that you can choose to keep or remove. You can add up to six titles to each playlist, which is not a lot but that may of course change in the future. Lastly, you select some cover art and have the option to share your Flixtape via a link, Facebook or twitter.

You can start creating your Flixtapes at The feature has not yet been integrated in the standard Netflix app.
