Sony has today unveiled five new 4K TV series for Europe. Three of them have already launched in the US. XD83, XD80, XD75, XD70 and SD80 are affordable 4K TVs with Google's Android TV operating system.
Affordable 4K TVs from Sony
Besides the new flagship Sony ZD9, the company has announced 9 new TVs spread across 5 model ranges. SD80 has a curved design but XD83, XD80, XD75, XD70 are all flat.
The new models all have 4K resolution and are ”HDR (high dynamic range) compatible” (XD75, XD70 and SD80 will receive a firmware update later). This means that the TVs can receive and process HDR content but do not have the hardware to reproduce HDR like Sony’s flagship TVs.
The TVs will be available in sizes from 43 to 65 inches and are equipped with Google’s Android TV operating system. Last year, Sony was amongst the first to embrace Google’s plans to create an universal TV platform, and with the release of the new models Android TV is coming to even more affordable 4K screens.
Android TV offers access to streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix and Amazon in 4K quality. Netflix and Amazon both have a small selection of HDR content, too. The TVs furthermore come equipped with Google Cast that allows you to push content to the TVs wirelessly from your mobile device.
From the Google Play Store on Android TV you can download games.
XD83, XD80, XD75, XD70 and SD80 will be available across Europe very soon. X70D, X75D and X80D have already been released in the US.
