Sony's new ZD9 (Z9D) flagship LCD is now shipping

30 Aug 2016 | Rasmus Larsen |

Z9D has been available in the US for a few weeks now, and starting this week ZD9 is also shipping in Europe, confirms Sony. The flagship TV is the first to utilize a technology called "Backlight Master Drive" to reproduce HDR (high dynamic range).

Sony ZD9 now available

Sony’s new flagship TV was unveiled in London, UK, in mid-July and is now available to buy from stores across the US and Europe, Sony tells us. It has been in stock at select retailers in the US for a few weeks now and the first shipments of the 65” model arrived in European countries last week and this week. Shipments of the 75” model should arrive in Europe this week or next. Sony will later add a massive 100” to the line-up.

The TV is dubbed Z9D in the US and ZD9 in Europe, and marks the beginning of a new high-end Z range from Sony. It is the first LCD TV to feature a new technology that Sony calls "Backlight Master Drive". Unlike competitors’ LCD flagship TVs that can control the LED backlight in a certain number of zones (for example 200 zones), Sony’s TV can control each individual LED behind the LCD panel. This enables more precise backlight control and better HDR picture quality, says Sony.

The use of ‘Backlight Master Drive’ makes the Z range the most advanced HDR TV from Sony to date.

In addition, the TV comes with Android TV (version 6.0), Google Cast, twin tuner, ’4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme’ processor, and HEVC/VP9 decoding. Learn more about ZD9 here.

Z9D starts at $6,999 in the US but is already sold for much less. ZD9 starts at €5000 in Europe.
