The Grand Tour

Amazon's 'The Grand Tour' is now available to stream in 4K/HDR internationally

Amazon has a decent catalog of TV series in 4K/HDR but at the moment only 'The Grand Tour' is available to stream in the format in international markets. More 4K/HDR content will follow later.

More 4K/HDR content coming later

Amazon appears to have had a successful roll-out of its Prime Video streaming service globally. While Amazon has yet to comment on the matter, the servers have withstood the pressure.

On global launch day it was not possible to stream in the highest possible picture quality but an app update on LG and Samsung Smart TVs on the second day of service has enabled the improved quality.

In Amazon’s existing markets such as the US and the UK there is a healthy catalog of content available to watch in 4K/HDR, including 'The Man in the High Castle', 'Transparency' and 'Mozart in the Jungle'. However, in international markets (that Amazon launched in on Wednesday) only ‘ The Grand Tour’ is available in 4K/HDR.

- "At the moment ‘The Grand Tour’ can be enjoyed in HDR globally. Amazon intends to expand 4K and HDR to users around the world but has nothing further to announce in this regard today," Amazon PR told FlatpanelsHD.

4K/HDR on LG and Samsung TVs

FlatpanelsHD has confirmed that it works after yesterday’s app update (version 1.0.7) on LG 2016 OLED TVs. In the photo above you can see the HDR and Ultra HD logos in the lower left corner.

Several users have confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that it also works on 2015 and 2016 Samsung “SUHD” Smart TVs.

4K/HDR does not appear to be working on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One S. Amazon tells us that game consoles are not officially supported in the international markets at this time.

- "We do not have any information to share at this time," said Amazon PR when FlatpanelsHD asked about support for game consoles.

To be clear, there is indeed an Amazon Prime Video on both game console systems but to download it you need to switch to for example the US or UK store. Afterwards you can switch back to your local store and continue to use the app. The highest video quality is 1080p HD.

Asked regarding the FireTV products, Amazon had the following to say.

- "Fire TV is currently only available in USA, the UK, Germany, Austria, and Japan."
